NBA Trade 2017 Latest News & Update: Derrick Rose For Ricky Rubio Fizzles, Find Out Why

By Vaughn Dweebs | Update Date: Feb 25, 2017 01:25 AM EST

There were plans for the New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves to swap Derrick Rose for Ricky Rubio, but nothing materialized at the NBA trade deadline last Feb. 23. While it seemed like a fair swap, there were precedents that contributed to the now botched trade.

Apparently, the Knicks wanted something packaged with Ricky Rubio in exchange for Derrick Rose, according to Marc Stein and reported by the Bleacher Report. Apparently, the Wolves were not willing to move anyone else other than the Spaniard. Hence, Rose remains with the Knicks as he plays out the season before hitting the free-agent market in the summer.

A move to Minnesota made a lot of sense considering it would reunite Derrick Rose with his former coach, Tom Thibodeau. As things stand now, that could still happen in the off-season unless some other team picks up the former MVP and at the right price. Rose believes he can get a max contract in the Summer despite critics singling out his questionable knees when he was still with the Chicago Bulls.

The Knicks will have to wade out the turmoil from within until the 2016-17 NBA season ends. Carmelo Anthony is another name that would have been moved but there were no takers. Like Rose, the 32-year-old forward also commands a big contract which team president Phil Jackson may want to get rid of, the NY Daily News reported. Anthony holds a no-trade clause, though he is expected to easily waive that right.

For Rubio, any potential move will have to wait as well. With Kris Dunn being groomed as the Wolves point guard of the future, the Spaniard and his high salary have been singled out as reasons for his eventual exit. There were several teams interested in Rubio though most are apprehensive with his high paycheck and lack of outside shooting.
