WWE 2017 Latest News & Update: Roman Reigns Can Technically Challenge Bray Wyatt For SmackDown Heavyweight Title

By Vaughn Dweebs | Update Date: Feb 17, 2017 10:28 PM EST

With Randy Orton refusing to face Bray Wyatt for the WWE SmackDown heavyweight title, a new challenger needs to step up. There will be an impromptu battle royal set on the Feb. 21 edition of WWE SmackDown where most the combatants will most likely be the same ones that Wyatt faced at the WWE Elimination Chamber.

John Cena, AJ Styles, Baron Corbin, Dean Ambrose and The Miz should be part of the battle royal plus Luke Harper who has a score to settle with Bray Wyatt. From the mix, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Harper emerge as the winner, making it a three-cornered Wyatt Family affair, Cageside Seats reported.

A Triple Threat match is one of many possibilities. But as far as Randy Orton’s loyalty to Bray Wyatt, expect something to give in the coming weeks before Wrestlemania 33. The word out is that the Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt match is still on so it all boils down to the storylines happening on next WWE shows. Speaking of shows, an interesting fact pointed out by Wrestling Inc. deserves looking into.

If Randy Orton is indeed pulling out, the right to challenge for the WWE heavyweight title automatically goes to the runner-up. Such was dug up from the old WWF rulebook, one that involved Vince McMahon and Steve Austin back in 1999. McMahon won the Royal Rumble that year but later on waived his right to name a new contender. Thanks to some help from commissioner Shawn Michaels, Austin got his title-shot anyway.

As most know, a lot has changed with the WWE. It remains to be seen if the same rulebook is in place. Either way, Roman Reigns could stake a claim to Wyatt’s title, assuming Randy Orton does rescind his right to challenge the “Eater of Worlds”. That idea is shaping up to be a long shot, meaning Orton vs. Wyatt (and Harper?) will materialize this April.
