The delay of "The Winds of Winter" release date has been a sore topic for "A Song Of Ice and Fire" readers who have been waiting ages for the new novel. Although George R.R. Martin has hinted that the sixth "ASOIAF" book could be completed in 2017, but it looks like "TWOW" has been pushed back in favor of a different work from the author.

It has long been speculated that "The Winds of Winter" release date would end up being in early 2017, allowing George R.R. Martin some time to publish the highly anticipated novel ahead of "Game of Thrones" Season 7. However, there is a possibility that the sixth "A Song of Ice and Fire" will be available much, much later.

The delay is made even more frustrating by the news that one of Martin's works that is also connected to "ASOIAF" could be released before "TWOW". Amazon has recently listed the release date for "Book of Swords", a collection of short stories edited by Gardner Dozois. Interestingly, one of the tales was penned by George R.R. Martin and has been described as "a new story set in the world of 'A Game of Thrones'."

The keyword here is "new", suggesting that Martin completed the unnamed short tale before "The Winds of Winter". So is it a recently finished short story based in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" universe. According to io9, there is still a possibility that George R.R. Martin actually worked on the tale a long time ago, but it has never been published until now.

Some also believe that the short story might be more connected to the "Dunk and Egg" tales rather than the current "Game of Thrones" storyline. Nevertheless, most are simply frustrated that "Book of Swords" will be available by October 10 while "The Winds of Winter" has no official release date just yet.
