Kyle Shanahan has officially been named the new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, something that hardly comes as a surprise. The offensive coordinator was expected to be officially named though the 49ers had to wait for Super Bowl LI to pass. Shanahan served as the offensive coordinator for the Falcons who unfortunately lost to the New England Patriots, 34-28 in overtime.

A Super Bowl LI triumph would have been sweet for Shanahan. Glimpses of his offensive brilliance could be seen from the Falcons who seemed primed to win their first Super Bowl. Unfortunately, Tom Brady decided to weave his magic and anchored one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history. With all that water under the bridge, the 37-year-old will take on a bigger role though he needs to whip up the 49ers roster first, USA Today reported.

The announcement seals the new tandem for the 49ers. John Lynch was previously named as the new general manager – something believed to be influenced by Shanahan. The two will take over from former general manager Trent Baalke and head coach Chip Kelly. It will be the third year-in-a-row that a new head coach inherits the coaching realms though Shanahan has carved his name in the NFL by now.

Among the immediate things, Kyle Shanahan needs to address is the quarterback position. Colin Kaepernick is still onboard though the 29-year-old is expected to opt out in the offseason. There are some who claim that Shanahan could be looking at other players like Jimmy Garoppolo and Matt Schaub, Yahoo Sports reported.

The last option for Kyle Shanahan is selecting one from the 2017 NFL Draft. The 49ers hold the rights to the second overall selection, something they could use on the best quarterback available from the incoming pool. As most can see, Shanahan and Lynch have a lot of work ahead and hopefully, their efforts will make team owner Jed York proud.
