‘Minecraft’ Windows Phone Version Won’t Get Support & Update From Microsoft; Released New Universal Windows Platform

Microsoft is said to be stopping its support to the Windows Phone 8.1 version of "Minecraft" and will instead reveal a general application. In fact, the tech giant recently released a new version of the sandbox video game for Windows 10 that is considered as a Universal Windows Platform.

The newly released version of "Minecraft" can basically run on all Windows platforms, like PC, Surface tablets, and HoloLens. Sadly, although the Windows 10 edition is still based on the game's Pocket Edition code, the company chose to go in contrast to its own developer guidelines and will only support its desktop lines. Hence, the players would have the need to use mouse and keyboard to play.

Microsoft decided to stop supporting the Windows Phone 8.1 version of "Minecraft," even though its development continuously runs. The game still have a great base of players, but its number of users between the Windows Phone players and fans are too little overlap to maintain Microsoft's support, Engadget reported. However, the owner of the title will continuously support the Android and iOS versions of "Minecraft: Pocket Edition" and will still port to devices like Gear VR and Apple TV.

Meanwhile, it is not yet clear if Microsoft will still continuously give Windows 10 Edition of "Minecraft" updates. Although the Pocket version and Windows 10 version of the game are constantly updated, the two are still different applications and not included in the Universal Windows Platform. According to Digital Trends, this comes as a surprise knowing that Microsoft bought Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014.

Also, even if Mojang is now under Microsoft, "Minecraft" would still have continuous update and support for Sony, Nintendo, iOS and Android devices. Compared to other systems that received the 1.0 version of the game in December 2016, the Windows Phone edition of the title "never quite made it out of beta."
