There is plenty of excitement surrounding the zombie flick "The Girl With All The Gifts", which will finally premiere in February. Although Melanie's story has yet to be shown in theaters worldwide, a sequel has already been confirmed and is set to be released later this year.

However, the sequel is not for "The Girl With All The Gifts" movie, which is actually based on M.R. Carey's 2014 novel. "The Boy On The Bridge" is the author's followup to the book and it will be released in May. The excerpt from the new novel confirms that although Melanie and the rest of the characters from the first book will not make an appearance, "The Boy" still has an important connection to "The Girl".

The first chapter of "The Girl With All The Gifts" sequel offers a glimpse at an important day in the life of Dr. Samrina Khan. The excerpt from "The Boy On The Bridge" brings the reader back into Melanie's world where hungries are everywhere and everyone has to move cautiously to avoid any encounters. Read the riveting chapter (exclusive to io9) here.

The featured chapter from "The Boy On The Bridge" makes no mention of Melanie, Helen Justineau or Dr. Caldwell for a simple reason. The sequel to "The Girl With All The Gifts" is a standalone story although it takes place in the same dystopian universe. However, the new novel connects to the first book through the mobile laboratory Rosalind Franklin where Dr. Samrina Khan brings specimens for observation.

"The Girl With All The Gifts" debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival and premiered in the UK on September 23, 2016. The film is scheduled for a limited release in the US on February 24. M.R. Carey's novel "The Boy On The Bridge" will be released by Hatchette on May 2.
