Go Pro has come up with its two new action cameras GoPro Hero 5 Black and GoPro Hero five sessions. While both are must haves, but they are at the same time quite different to each other.

Functional Difference: The Camera

Both the cameras can capture 4K video at 30 fps. However, as the resolution reduces the Hero5 Black captures images at faster frame rate than Session. For example, Hero Black can go up to 1200 fps at 1080p (Full HD) whereas the Session can manage a maximum of 90 fps.

Even for still images, Black has a cutting edge of 12 megapixels over the 10 megapixel Session. It also comes up with RAW image file format so that one can boost up the image later.

Black also comes up with an extra set of options available. It enables to adjust the white balance, shutter speed, and  ISO settings. Hence it makes a night shoot more viable than Session.

Both the cameras are capable of capturing in super view, medium and linear views. However while Black can capture 1080p at 120 fps in wide and narrow fields, Session can manage 1080p at 90 fps in a wide field only. Moreover Hero Black can shoot 4k both in super view and linear view, Session fails to do so.

Design and Size

The user no longer has to worry about waterproofing with an external case. The action cameras are waterproof to 33 feet and also survived deep sea diving at 10 feet. The Hero 5 Black has a touch screen whereas the Session lacks in it.

However, the Session is more compact due to the absence of touch-screen. It is a mere of 38 mm x 38 mm x36 mm and weighs 74 grams. The Hero 5, definitely, on the other hand, has dimensions of 44.5 mm x 62mmx 32mm and weighs 117 grams offers excellent portability.

Controls

Hero5 Black only has one button used to switch the power and recording on or off. The Session, on the other hand, has two buttons. One is used for the power on and off and the other for the video recording.

Hero 5 Black offers touch-screen. So the functions are directly controlled without using a Smartphone app. As far as Session is concerned, the two buttons present are configured to select all the available functions.

Both are voice controlled. They respond to the commands "GO PRO STOP RECORDING" most of the time except for times when hindered by excessive noise.

Battery

The Hero 5 Black has a battery capacity of 1200 mAh whereas Session has 1000 mAh. It's justified because Hero 5 Black needs more power to drive the touch screen.

The 1200 mAh battery is, however, removable .It makes it easy to replace the battery once drained. This option is not available in Session.

Connectivity

The camera is equipped with USB-C ports for both charging and connecting to external devices. There is a micro SD slot and a micro HDMI connector to connect directly to monitor or TV. They also provide Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

GPS

GoPro has finally included GPS in the sports watches. However, the uses are limited. It can only tag the location of the photos taken. The company is working on the software update to include more advanced features that can measure depth and elevation etc.

Which One Should You Go For?

The GoPro Hero 5 Black costs a hundred dollar more than the Session but it provides a high edge over the Session when it comes to photography and easy screen touch. However, if the usage includes mounting the camera on the helmet most of the times and a bit of compromise with the image quality is not an issue then Hero 5 Black is a better option.
