Healthy Choice Chicken with Rice Soup Recalled due to Mislabeling

By Cheri Cheng | Update Date: Feb 05, 2014 10:38 AM EST

ConAgra Foods has announced that it is recalling 5,200 cases of its chicken with rice soup products due to a mislabeling issue. According to the company, its Microwaveable Healthy Choice Chicken Noodle Soup products have been misbranded as Microwaveable Healthy Choice Chicken with Rice Bowl Soup.

Although there is no food contamination involved in this recall, the products are made with different ingredients. The United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) stated that the Healthy Choice Chicken Noodle Soup is made with wheat and egg, which would not be labeled in the Healthy Choice Chicken with Rice Bowl Soup. This could pose a health problem for people with wheat or egg allergies or are gluten-intolerant. For example, this misbranded product could cause intestinal damage for people with celiac disease.

The products involved with the recall were produced on Dec. 16, 2013. They were distributed to many retail outlets in 23 states, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Puerto Rico. The company was notified of the mistake by customers who ended up with noodle soup instead of rice.

The microwavable "Healthy Choice Chicken with Rice" soups that are being recalled are labeled 14-oz (397g) with a Best By data of "JUN092015," located at the bottom of the bowl. ConAgra is working hard to remove all misbranded products off the shelves.
