A girl was recently arrested for allegedly killing her aunt, who was forcing her to take her meds.

Ondo State authorities in Nigeria have apprehended 17-year-old Omowunmi Aduloju on allegations of fatally stabbing her aunt, Funmilayo Adelami.

The incident, which occurred at the victim's residence on Oda Road, Akure, the state capital, has sent shockwaves through the community.

Local reports suggest that Adelami, who was in her 50s, met her untimely demise allegedly at the hands of her mentally unstable niece, Aduloju, who had been under her care since the age of six.

Aduloju's mental health deteriorated in 2023, leading to her admission to a psychiatric hospital in the state. After her discharge, she was entrusted back into the care of her late aunt.

Adelami's body was discovered on March 17 after neighbors noticed a foul smell emanating from her residence.

Upon investigation, her decomposing body was found, bearing marks of violence, including stab wounds.

"The Police took the remains to the morgue, and during clean up, a mark of violence ( stabbing) was observed while a knife was also found at the scene of crime," Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya said, ARISE NEWS reported.

Aduloju allegedly locked herself inside the house following the incident.

It was Adelami's sister who uncovered clues about the tragedy, leading to Aduloju's subsequent arrest. The minor was then questioned by the police.

During the interrogation, Aduloju confessed to the fatal stabbing, saying she got fed up since her aunt had been pressuring her to take her medication for her mental health.

Authorities revealed that Aduloju's mental health history, documented by the psychiatric hospital where she received treatment, corroborated claims of her struggles.

The young suspect is currently under police custody at a medical facility to prevent harm to herself and others.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities strive to understand further the circumstances leading to the tragic death of Adelami.
