From a warm cup of coffee to a gentle breeze, finding delight in the mundane creates a sense of contentment. Embracing these moments promotes gratitude and enriches one's daily existence, resulting in true happiness.

Dishabituation is the process by which a previously habituated response to a stimulus is revived or intensified following the introduction of a new, novel, or significant stimulus. It involves the brain's ability to reset its responsiveness to a familiar stimulus after it has become desensitized to it over time.

This allows individuals to regain interest, excitement, or sensitivity to a stimulus they have grown accustomed to, leading to renewed appreciation or heightened response. In essence, dishabituation involves breaking the monotony of habit by introducing change, which refreshes one's perception and experience of the stimulus.

The effect of small changes

In "Look Again: The Power of Noticing What Was Always There," authors Tali Sharot and Cass R. Sunstein looked at the approach of dishabituation. The authors advocate for small changes in routine or environment to enhance life's enjoyment. In an interview, Sharot emphasized the need to balance familiarity with novelty for enhanced well-being

By altering habits, like trying new hobbies or taking breaks from familiar activities, individuals can reset their enjoyment levels, combating habituation. Practical benefits include increased sensitivity to surroundings and appreciation for positive experiences.

Engaging in novel experiences helps stimulate the brain and counteract habituation. This could involve anything from traveling to a new destination, learning a new skill, or simply trying a different cuisine. By stepping outside familiar comfort zones, individuals expose themselves to fresh stimuli, reinvigorating their sense of curiosity and excitement.

Embracing change, no matter how small, encourages a deeper appreciation for life's joys. By integrating dishabituation principles into daily routines, individuals can rediscover joy in the familiar.
