Kiwifruit Rapidly Improves Mood and Vitality, Researchers Say

Maintaining a healthy diet is essential for overall well-being, but the relationship between food and mood continues to intrigue researchers. 

In a new study, researchers looked into the impact of eating kiwifruit on mood and vitality.

Fruits are essential components of a balanced diet, and kiwifruit stands out as one that offers various health benefits. It is rich in fiber, potassium, and vitamin E, and it notably has high levels of vitamin C. It also provides support to gastrointestinal function and helps regulate blood sugar and lipid levels.

The role of vitamin C in mental health

Vitamin C plays a critical role in immune system function and wound healing. There is some evidence of the mood-boosting effects of vitamin C supplements and vitamin-C-rich fruits, prompting researchers to explore its potential impact on mental health and brain function.

The study, conducted as a three-armed placebo-controlled trial, focused on adults with low plasma levels of vitamin C. Divided into three groups receiving vitamin C supplements, kiwifruit, or a placebo, participants underwent a four-week intervention.

Using smartphone surveys and regular blood work, researchers found that participants consuming kiwifruit experienced mood and vitality improvements within four days, surpassing the effects seen in the vitamin C supplement group. The study emphasizes the value of real-time mood monitoring and suggests that whole-food sources may offer unique benefits.

Insights from the study

Co-author and professor Tamlin Conner highlighted the surprising mood improvement result of a small change in diet, like simply adding kiwifruit to daily intake. The study suggested incorporating vitamin C into the diet, especially through whole foods, may offer distinct advantages over synthetic sources.

In a report, dietitian Rick Miller emphasized the importance of a "whole food-first" approach. Miller said that food-based vitamins and synthetic sources are not equivalent. The findings showed the potential of kiwifruit as a mood-enhancing food and advocate for a holistic dietary approach to mental well-being.
