Quality of life is a concept discussed in various research fields, including psychology, international development, economics and healthcare. Defining it, however, remains challenging due to its context-dependent nature.

Berkeley Well-Being Institute founder Tchiki Davis has explained that the World Health Organization offers a significant perspective, defining quality of life as an individual's perception of their position in life concerning culture, values, goals, expectations, standards and concerns. Despite its subjective nature, some researchers would argue for the inclusion of objective measures in assessing one's well-being.

Here are the aspects of life that a person can focus on for an improved quality of life, according to Davis:

Physical health

Physical health is a big part of life that affects overall quality. Individuals must assess how their physical well-being contributes to or detracts from their overall satisfaction. Considerations include the impact of dietary choices on mood and energy levels, satisfaction with sleep quantity and quality, and the frequency of physical activity. Improving physical health requires consistency in daily habits and gradual changes if needed.

Psychological health

Managing emotions and moods significantly affects psychological well-being. Living in the present, cultivating optimism about the future, and building resilience to life stressors are essential aspects. Identifying areas for improvement and gradually implementing changes can enhance psychological health and contribute to an improved quality of life.

Social life

Social relationships play a pivotal role in one's overall well-being. Having someone to talk to about challenges, confidence in meeting new people, and effective communication with significant others, friends and family are critical factors. Strengthening social connections involves the ability to have open communication and building confidence in social interactions.

Belief system

Spirituality, religion, and personal beliefs contribute to an individual's quality of life. Reflecting on the importance of these aspects, engaging in discussions with like-minded individuals, and evaluating the impact of media consumption on personal growth are key considerations. Addressing any confusion regarding spirituality and making intentional choices about media consumption can positively impact this domain.
