What is Nail Anxiety?

The trending hashtag #nailanxiety, with over 20.7k TikTok views and counting, has revealed what has been affecting individuals during their visits to the nail salon.

Nail anxiety, characterized by a sense of uneasiness, manifests in various ways, from perfectionism to gender-coded pressures and even habit-based nail issues. People who claim to have nail anxiety have the internal struggle of maintaining a clear vision for their nails while avoiding the anxiety-inducing act of watching someone else execute it. This perfectionism, often fueled by societal beauty standards and edited images, may contribute to an obsessive pursuit of flawless appearances, particularly in the younger generation.

Control behavior and finding empowerment in DIY nail routines

For many nail artists, the anxiety associated with nails takes a positive turn as it drives them to achieve intricate details in their art. However, when nails become a profession, the stress intensifies. Nail creators Sarah Haider and Jess Brush share how their self-imposed standards lead to frustration and anxiety, even though they maintain control over their nail designs.

Salon anxiety and gendered spaces

Some individuals experience generalized anxiety at nail salons, especially during procedures involving sharp tools or cuticle cleanup. Nail content creator Abe highlights the gendered aspect of salon anxiety, recounting the challenges of being a man with painted nails in a traditionally female-coded space.

Nail care as a mindfulness practice

While it may be a source of anxiety, nail care can serve as a self-care and mindfulness practice. Regular routines offer moments of focused attention, promoting relaxation and a sense of well-being for practitioners.

For those struggling with control behavior when visiting nail salons, nail anxiety can be alleviated in a few ways. Polite communication with nail artists is an essential part of this, as well as early intervention during salon services and the acceptance of imperfections.
