How to Help Teens Maintain Mental Wellness by Managing Their Screen Time

There is a strong correlation between excessive screen time and mental health issues in adolescents. To address this concern, parents and guardians are recommended to adopt strategies that help teens manage their screen time effectively. Here are some of them.

Prioritize sleep

One significant aspect of maintaining mental wellness in teenagers is ensuring they get adequate sleep. The blue light emitted by screens can disrupt the circadian rhythm, affecting the quality and duration of sleep.

Encouraging teens to establish a bedtime routine and limit screen exposure at least an hour before bedtime can significantly contribute to better sleep quality, positively impacting their mental health.

Set screen time boundaries

Some schools in the United States have implemented a no-phone movement, and it has been reported to improve focus and enhance well-being among students. However, this does not have to stop at school. Parents can implement similar rules at home and allow their children to enjoy time without mobile devices.

Limit notification settings

Constant notifications on social media, messaging apps, and other platforms can create a sense of urgency and anxiety. Parents can guide teens in managing their notification settings, encouraging them to disable non-essential notifications during study and relaxation time. This simple adjustment helps minimize distractions and promote a healthier digital balance.

Let them know they're not alone

Parents often play a crucial role in shaping the behavior of their children, especially during the teenage years. By openly discussing their struggles with screen time and its impact on mental wellness, parents create a supportive environment. This approach aligns with social learning theory, emphasizing that teens are more likely to adopt positive behaviors if they witness them being practiced by significant adults in their lives.
