Is Thirst Trapping a Red Flag?

By Dynne C. | Update Date: Nov 08, 2023 12:39 AM EST

Social media has been on the rise for over a decade now, and it continues to grow. And while that happens, new trends continue to emerge as well. One particular trend is thirst trapping.

While thirst trapping is not new at all, many people question why others do it and what it means. Is it automatically a red flag?

What Is a Thirst Trap?

thirst trap is an intentionally provocative image or flirty message posted on social media. Like many social media habits, some may view it as a form of seeking validation, while others see it as a way to express themselves.

Either way, it is meant to catch or "trap" followers who are supposedly attracted to or "thirsty" for the person who posted on the platform.

Wellness writer and educator Melissa A. Fabello, PhD, explained that, like most trends, thirst trapping has a good and bad side. It can boost one's self-esteem, but at the same time, it can also do the opposite.

Having a Relationship With Someone Who Thirst Traps

For people in a relationship or those who are planning to start one with somebody who is fond of setting thirst traps, the question resides - is this a red flag?

Ultimately, red flags are typically subjective, meaning it depends on every individual's point of view. In the case of getting into a relationship with someone who thirst traps, communication is essential. Psychologist Mark Travers, PhD, said that this can be done by communicating with your partner about each other's ideas and intent on the trend.
