Netflix's '13 Reasons Why' Depicts Social Awareness For Adolescents; Series Garnered Different Reactions [VIDEO]

There have been different reactions regarding the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why." There are those who reacted negatively to the issue on the series while some viewed it as entertainment.

What Is The Series About?

The Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" has 13 episodes and explores the story of a teenager, Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) who committed suicide. Before she succumbs to suicide, she records her high school life suffering in 13 cassette tapes, as reported by The New York Times.

Right after the series aired on Netflix; there were several reactions from the people. It has been indicated that the show has been presenting suicide to the teenagers. However, there is one person who actually made the tapes and the recordings as his proposal for his prom date. In fact, they have called the act in the series "13 Reasons Why" as entertaining.

The series "13 Reasons Why" is based on a novel by Jay Asher. Selena Gomez is one of the executive producers of the series. There have been a lot of depictions for teenagers in the story of the show. It talks a lot about the adolescents nowadays.

Writer Defends Netflix Show

Meanwhile, the writer for "13 Reasons Why" has defended the criticisms that have been thrown at the show. It has been indicated that the suicide has been irresponsibly depicted in the series.

However, Nic Sheff has defended that the only thing that was not responsible for the show was not showing the details of the suicide itself, according to Metro.

Sheff also shared in a letter that he wanted to take on the show right after he read the story. He noted that "13 Reasons Why" gave him a reason to cite reality issues of adolescents. This can be cyberbullying, sexual assault, and depression.

It is indicated in the letter what Sheff underwent as a crystal-meth user himself. He further shared that there were things that saved him from his own darkness. "13 Reasons Why" depicts suicide on a positive note, as Sheff presents it.
