Understanding The Standoff: Reasons Why US Women's Hockey Is Threatening On Boycott

By Gerard Black | Update Date: Mar 17, 2017 10:58 AM EDT

The USA Women's Hockey scene is in chaos. After the deadline on Thursday passed, the members of the USA Women's Hockey Team are still firm on their decision to continue the boycott until their demand for fair compensation, among other things has been met.

The discussions on their main talking point, the fair wages as the men's team, still hasn't moved forward. Fox Sports reports that this means the USA Women's Hockey team will still not join the training camp this coming week. The training camp would have been the start of the USA Women's Hockey team's preparations for the International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Hockey Championship slated to begin March 31.

The USA Women's Hockey Team demands wages that are at par with that of the men's team and a four-year contract. A Yahoo! Sports report says that the women's hockey team members have each only been given $1000 dollars a month for six years leading up to the Olympics and have contracts only during Olympic years making them work up to two jobs to support themselves.

USA Hockey, the governing body of the sport in the US has downplayed the boycott. USA Hockey spokesman Dave Fischer has indicated that with or without the current members of the women's hockey team, they will be able to form a highly competitive delegation. But women's hockey national player Hillary Knight believes otherwise as the player's pool is united on the issue.

Even as the boycott continues, the members of women's hockey team have been training as if they will still attend the training camp on March 21 just to be ready for any eventuality. The USA is set to defend their world title in Michigan and this will be a gauge for the team's condition in the run up to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea.
