Six years after "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" was released in theaters, Sony Pictures is finally pushing through with the sequel, "The Girl in the Spider’s Web." The film now has a release date attached to it, and is set to hit theaters on Oct. 5, 2018. Principal photography will begin this Sept. and the film will be directed by Fede Alvarez.

No More Rooney Mara For "The Girl In The Spider's Web"

According to Deadline, don't expect to see Rooney Mara back in the film, as "The Girl in the Spider’s Web" will have an entirely different cast. As Fede Alvarez will take the director's seat from David Fincher, they are also set out to find Rooney Mara's replacement for Lisbeth. The script for the upcoming 2018 film is written by Steven Knight and Jay Besu, together with Alvarez.

"The Girl in the Spider’s Web" is the fourth book in the Millennium series, which was originally written by Steig Larsson. "Spider's Web" was penned after Larsson's death by David Lagercrantz. Alvarez admitted that "Lisbeth Salander is the kind of character any director dreams of bringing to life" and that they already have a "great script" and they're looking forward to finding the actress who will play Lisbeth.

Who Could Be Casted For The Role Of Lisbeth?

According to Collider, some actresses who are in the running to play the role are Alicia Vikander, who unfortunately passed on the role, Natalie Portman, and Scarlett Johansson, who also has "Ghost in the Shell" releasing this year. Nothing's been finalized yet, however, as they are still conducting meetings for the role. Meanwhile, Columbia Pictures’ president Sanford Panitch described the character as "modern punk defiance personified."
