Height Preferences Important while Choosing a Partner?

By Staff Reporter | Update Date: Jan 17, 2013 08:40 AM EST

Everyone dreams of a perfect life partner and the required qualities differ from person to person. The height of an individual is not a criterion while choosing one'sr better half, however, the height preference is evident in the U.K couples on a real time basis. Gert Stulp and colleagues from the University of Groningen, Netherlands, have found that by observing real couples in U.K, one would be able to find out their height preferences.

According to the research, only two in hundred couples had a women's height greater than the man. Men prefer shorter women, while women also prefer men who are taller than them.

It was also observed that short women prefer men who are considerably taller than them. Similarly, tall men prefer women whose height is distinctively lesser than them. The case is not the same for tall women who prefer shorter men, where the smaller the difference in height, higher the preference.

All the other studies done on this topic previously dealt with either expectations or preferences of an individual, wherein the data of actual couples was not studied. For their research the authors of the current study, observed and analyzed data from 10,000 couples in U.K and found the height difference between a man and a woman to be less than 8 inches on an average.

"While preferences for partner height generally translate into actual pairing, they do so only modestly," the authors were quoted in Medical Express.

The research result was published in the journal PLOS ONE.
