A young Tunisian man devoured 28 raw eggs as part of a bet from his friends and died shortly afterwards. Medical examiners are still searching for the cause of death but early reports suggests the death is linked to Salmonella.

Dhaou Fatnassi, 20, from the town of Kairouan in Tunisia, swallowed the eggs after his friends challenged him to do so for an undisclosed sum of money. The bet was for him to eat 30 raw eggs, one after the other.

According to news.com.au, Fatnassi was taken to the hospital after experiencing stomach pains but died on arrival.

"Doctors were called in after the young man felt strong stomach pains, but he died before medical assistance could reach him," Tunisia's Shems FM radio station said in a report on Wednesday.

The cause of his cause death has not yet been confirmed, but doctors believe that merely eating a large quantity of raw eggs in one seating is enough reason for his death.

Salmonella which causes food poisoning in raw foods like meat and eggs is perhaps what Dhaou died from.

Salmonella is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
