iPhone 7 Latest News & Update: Apple Launches Probe On Smoking Flagship Unit

Apple may have to deal with the same fate that Samsung had with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 after an 18-year-old teenager witnessed her iPhone 7 Plus belching out smoke and claimed that the flagship blew up. A video showing the smoking iPhone 7 Plus was put up on social media and has been shared over 30,000 times.

Footage of the iPhone 7 Plus giving off smoke was captured by the boyfriend of owner Brianna Olivas. She was sleeping at that time and her boyfriend reportedly noticed smoke on the said device. Apple has come forward to probe the incident, communicating with Olivas on the matter, 9 to 5 Mac reported.

Prior to the iPhone 7 Plus catching smoke, Olivas claims that the device was already malfunctioning. The iPhone 7 Plus didn’t turn on despite having 56-percent of battery charge remaining. The phone also turned on but then conked off again, hinting of a possible defective battery. Olivas did bring the device to the Apple store when it started to act up. She purchased the iPhone from Sprint last Jan. 4.

While a battery problem of the iPhone 7 Plus makes sense, the Cupertino company has yet to come up with its official findings. Apple has had its share of battery issues though it previously covered the iPhone 6 and 6s. iOS 10.2.1 is now rolling out with Apple claiming that the new mobile OS will fix 70 to 80 percent of the battery bug problem according to a report from Forbes.

The issue is not the first time that the iPhone 7 has been tied up to a fire-causing incident. Back in October, a man in Australia claimed that his iPhone 7 caught fire and eventually destroyed his car, AOL.com reported. Compared to the iPhone 6/6s, the iPhone 7/ 7 Plus has not been plagued by the issue as often so it will be interesting what official statement Apple will have on the incident.
