NBA 2017 Latest News & Update: Derrick Williams Ups Chances Of Winning An NBA Ring

Derrick Williams found himself in semi-limbo recently following his release from the Miami Heat. The rebuilding franchise opted to go with Okaro White, leaving the former no. 2 pick without a job. Regardless, Williams is too good a player for teams to pass up and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat other NBA teams to him.

The Cavs, trying to fill up the holes in their roster, offered Derrick Williams a 10-day contract, an opportunity that could become long-term, ESPN reported. Williams shined during his tenure with the New York Knicks but sputtered in South Beach. Now all he has to do is recall that old form and try to impress coach Tyronn Lue and of course LeBron James.

Derrick Williams will likely fill the void left by Chris Andersen. The “Birdman” went down with an ACL injury last December, ending his season unceremoniously. If he turns out to be a good fit, Williams will be the fourth big man for the Cavs. The others are Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, and Channing Frye.

One thing that Lue and the Cavs will look for from Williams is the energy and excitement he has been known to bring. His defense may need some polishing based on recent performances. He is seen as a player who can play as much as 36-minutes per game and deliver career averages of 16 points and 7 rebounds per outing, CBS Sports reported.

Williams is aware that he doesn’t need to score that much and do the role-playing duties such as hustling and rebounding. He has been doing much of this throughout his career so recalling those responsibilities from his Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks days, he could end up getting singed for the rest of the season – plus the possibility of snagging an NBA ring if the Cavs make it back-to-back NBA titles.
