NFL 2017 Latest News & Update: Cleveland Browns Clean Shop, Release Josh McCown And Tramon Williams

The Cleveland Browns have started to clean up their roster and the casualties include Josh McCown and Tramon Williams. The Browns terminated the contracts of both players, freeing up about $11.3 million in salary cap space. This means that Cleveland now has over $105 million of cap space available for 2017, something that may provide them added flexibility of getting in new players in the mix.

A glaring hole in the Browns lineup is the quarterback position. Aside from McCown, there is Robert Griffin III who signed a two-year pact last season. He hardly made an impact following a shoulder injury in week 1. Cody Kessler showed promise in his rookie year but is best kept as a backup quarterback, for now, Cleveland.com reported. With these facts on the table, it won’t come as a surprise if the Browns skim the free agent market for available quarterbacks.

If not NFL free agency, there is the 2017 NFL Draft to look forward to. The Browns own the no. 1 and 12 picks and it is likely that they will use those to get the best quarterbacks from this year’s class. Among the intriguing choices include Deshaun Watson, Mitch Trubisky, and DeShone Kizer. If not a quarterback, Cleveland could go for pass-rusher Myles Garrett first and then use the 12th pick for a quarterback, Bleacher Report reported.

Seeing that they already have one young quarterback in the mix, the Browns could opt to trade their pick for a veteran. Among the tempting names, they may consider include Jimmy Garoppolo of the New England Patriots or even Kirk Cousins of the Washington Redskins. A lot depends on the call of Hue Jackson and company who will try once more to rebuild and compete next NFL season following a woeful 1-15 performance.

Before McCown and Williams were released, the Browns picked up Tyvis Powell on waivers. He was released by the Seattle Seahawks last Jan. 4 but the Browns could only announce the move after Super Bowl LI.
