Update Date: Jan 18, 2017 09:59 AM EST

The highly anticipated "Injustice 2" officially has a release date as well as a lengthy story trailer, and it looks like a long-rumored supervillain will finally be introduced as a playable character. Fans who have been begging NetherRealm to add Darkseid to the sequel's roster are in for a major treat when the title hits the stores in May. The powerful DC baddie has been confirmed as a huge part of the game.

Darkseid's arrival isn't the only truly exciting thing to look forward to in the "Injustice 2" release date. The story trailer for the NetherRealm game reveals that it won't be a matter of Batman vs. Superman vs. Wonder Woman. Instead, Kal-El's cousin Supergirl is set for a major smackdown against the DC Trinity.

The recently released story trailer for "Injustice 2" opens with a chained Superman being labelled as a "monster" while Batman appears to struggle with a major decision. The trailer is definitely filled with superhero-on-superhero violence, but the highlight is undoubtedly the brawl between Supergirl and Wonder Woman. The epic girlfight is interrupted by the arrival of Superman and Batman as the DC Trinity sizes up Kara Zor-El before the video ends with a glimpse of Darkseid.

Darkseid is more than just a teaser for the "Injustice 2" release date. The final moments of the trailer urges gamers to pre-order their title to get the supervillain as a playable character. This should be a no-brainer for avid fans, especially if Darkseid's Omega Beams can be included in the gameplay.

People have been waiting for the "Injustice 2" release date since the sequel was teased by NetherRealm last year. Darkseid's inclusion in the game roster certainly promises a darker but nevertheless exciting gameplay (just make sure to pre-order the title). "Injustice 2" will be available on Xbox and PlayStation4 on May 16, per GameSpot.
