"The Originals" season 4 may be airing this year but the next one after that wasn't among the seven CW series that scored early renewals on Sunday. Cancellation speculation had been prevalent ever since the parent series - "The Vampire Diaries" - was announced it's going to end after eight seasons.

"The Originals" season 4 won't air until March 17, 2017, and this could be the main reason why the spinoff series wasn't included among the shows, which got early renewals from The CW, Entertainment Weekly reported. The spinoff series is looking to follow its predecessor "The Vampire Diaries," which will air its last season this year. The CW President Mark Pedowitz spoke about their decision not to renew "The Originals" for season 5.

Pedowitz revealed that he already talked to executive producer Julie Plec regarding the renewal of "The Originals" season 5 during the Television Critics Association's press tour on Sunday. He pointed out that "The Originals" season 4 hasn't premiered yet, adding that it would probably be best to discuss things around May. He also left a reassuring message saying that he's a big fan of Plec. He hopes that "The Vampire Diaries" spinoff series will continue but it all depends on the TV ratings, as all TV series are.

"The Originals" season 4 was pushed back for a spring premiere date, deviating from its usual fall premiere for the past three seasons, Cinemablend noted. This prompted many fans to think that it could follow its predecessor "The Vampire Diaries." However, Pedowitz' words should assure fans that it's still highly possible that the series will continue given that he likes the idea of working with Plec.
