Going against blockbuster hits this movie season, "Moana" movie release was announced to be the winner at the box office over the weekend. In fact, its domestic total had reached $144.5 in sales and is expected to earn more in the coming weeks.

In a span of three weeks, "Moana" movie release has garnered the top-spot as the best-selling movie of this year. In fact, in U.S. and Canada theaters from Friday last week through Sunday, it had garnered $18,522,804 in sales in 3,875 locations with $4,783 average sales this month, reported Yahoo! Finance.

Under the ranks, "Moana" movie release overcame that of "Office Christmas Party" which was ranked second with $16,890,204 followed by "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" ranked third with $10,421,251.

In other news, it was revealed that Disney had hit the animated comedy North American box office with a total of $145 million for the studio. Compared to its previous successful movie releases, "Tangled" garnered the same pace last 2010 - the "Moana" movie release as the highest since then.

Furthermore, "Moana" movie release has been lodged as 26 percent ahead of the final domestic gross of $240 million for Disney and is still ranked at the top in 12 countries, reported Rotten Tomatoes.

Apart from the "Moana" movie release, Disney is also banking on more profit for movies released this year such as "Doctor Strange" and next week's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." Its competition in the movie industry for the top spot are Lucasfilm, Marvel Comics Cinematic Universe, and that of Pixar. In fact, the company has been deemed to expect huge returns for 2018 as well.

In general, the top ten films for this year had grossed an estimate of $73.1 million which is 10% more from last year's "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2." Thanks to "Moana" movie release success this month, Disney is reaching heights for better profits in the movie industry.
