The much-awaited release of "Avatar 2" might finally happen in 2018, Independent reported. According to the publication, following a spot of schedule-rejigging, the 20th Century Fox may have just revealed the release date of the "Avatar" sequel for an untitled James Cameron project has been scheduled for a release on 20 Dec. 2018.

Rumors suggest that in all likelihood, the mentioned James Cameron project could be "Avatar 2" since its predecessor, "Avatar" was given a Christmas release in 2009.

The Exhibitor Relations officially revealed the release of upcoming Untitled Fox/ Lighthouse Film on Dec. 20, 2018. Lightstorm is James Cameron's production company which produced "Avatar." 20th Century Fox was the distributing company of "Avatar" and it looks like "Avatar 2" will be distributed by them as well, according to Inquisitr.

Meanwhile, Stephen Lang, who reprises his role of Colonel Miles Quaritch in "Avatar 2" recently talked about the sequels of "Avatar" and what fans can expect from it. "As the new year turns, we start to shoot for the Avatar sequels. I think that the whole process of making the films and releasing the films will go to about 2023," said Lang.

Lang's insights on the sequels match with earlier announcement of Cameron, where he said that his new movies would be released in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023. Variety revealed that when Cameron was working on the first part of the film, he initially planned on making only two possible sequels of "Avatar." However, after further brainstorming with four of his screenwriters and graphics team, he decided to narrate the story in four different parts.

As of now, rumors suggest that "Avatar 2" could likely be releasing around Christmas in  2018. The sequels will be following closely Jake, Neytiri and their children's "battles with humans."
