'Moana' topped the Thanksgiving eve box office collection with $15.7 million. The Walt Disney film released to a packed audience on a first full day, leaving the competition in its wake.

'Moana' surpassed the $15.2 million first day collection of Walt Disney's 'Frozen,' which had released over the same holiday period in 2013. The film collected just under the $15.8 million on the opening day of 'Big Hero 6' and $19.5 million on the opening day of 'Zootopia,.'

'Big Hero 6' and 'Zootopia' released on Friday as opposed to 'Moana,' which released on Wednesday. 'Moana' marks the biggest opening day ever for a Thanksgiving movie, Forbes reported.

'Moana' follows the adventures of a girl in the pacific islands who embarks an oceanic journey to save her people. The film stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Nicole Scherzinger, Alan Tudyk, and newcomer Au Li'l Cravalho in pivotal roles.

According to EW, 'Moana' is on pace to match 'Frozen's' $67 million take, finishing off its collection between $68-72 million and possibly higher.

Disney has had a good year with the company fielding a number of hits in 2016. It's collections of blockbuster hits this year include 'The Jungle Book,' 'Zootopia' and 'Finding Dory.' 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' is yet to release this year on Dec. 14. The 'Star Wars' series is expected to debut to more than $130 million when it hits theaters, Variety said.

Meanwhile, 'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them' earned another $11.2 million on Wednesday while Marvel's 'Doctor Strange' collected $3 million to add to its $189.2 million gross.

Brad Pitt's 'Allied' collected $2.7 million on Wednesday and 'Bad Santa 2' starring Billy Bob Thornton collected roughly $1.6 million, underperforming expectations.
