Samsung’s Most-Rumored Foldable Smartphone Design Gets Patented

For years numerous rumors have been in the air on Samsung developing foldable smartphones.   These rumors have found life as Samsung acquired patent for a foldable smartphone design in Korea. It is expected that the design shall take full shape and commercial foldable smartphones will be released by Samsung next year along with its other upcoming flagship devices. Reports earlier this year said that Samsung is developing three distinct flagship devices for next year.

Project Valley or Galaxy X

The patent application discovered in Korea gives us the first look of foldable smartphone design from Samsung. This phone is dubbed to be named as Samsung Galaxy X or Project Valley and is said to look like old flip phones.

Foldable OLED displays

The difference, however, is that that the smartphone shall have foldable OLED display that is being experimented for a long time. The design shows that the phone will have an innovative flexible rear hinge and foldable display. This allows the users to seamlessly move from stretched mode to flip phone mode.

Samsung sets the trend for bendable phones

It is also rumored that Samsung would be in the direction of mass-production of flexible displays as mentioned in the patent application. According to The Verge, "the patent corroborates an earlier rumor about Samsung's plan to ship devices, specifically tablets and smartphones, with bendable OLED display".

According to the forecast of Hyundai Securities analyst Kim Dong-won "The year 2017 will be the first year of foldable smartphones for the mass market, following the launches by the Korean firms, other global rivals in 2018"

Expectations on the new foldable design

Smartphones can be used as tablets upon unfolding with a 7-inch display. The foldable design is considered to be cheek-hugging and most convenient for making calls. Also, users can simultaneously watch videos on YouTube and send text messages by folding their phones to have a video screen and keyboard at the same time. The foldable version is also looked ahead to solve the problem of holding bigger phones and are expected to be pocket-fitting!
