Sony Launching New Mobile Games To Rival Niantic With Its Subsidiary Forwardworks

By Shobha Vats | Update Date: Nov 11, 2016 08:22 AM EST

Pokémon Go by Niantic has changed the face of virtual reality ever since its inception. It has made the rival companies question their gaming process and set high standards.

It has been a game- changer thereby compelling many of its competitive businesses to contemplate and invest in their innovations in the gaming industry. It has more market Value than Sony and other such companies.

Sony is one such rival that intends to create its set of games for the mobile platform by taking advantage of its franchise, PlayStation. As quoted by Sony CEO Kaz Hirai, Sony is ''aggressively getting into'' developing games for mobiles. Sony has not penetrated this market for the first time. It came before Nintendo (Counterspy, Entwined). With setbacks in the past, Sony is planning to take it more seriously this time.

Release

According to Nikkei, Sony is all set to launch five games catering to the mobile platform by March 2018. The dates are still not set. Rumor is that Sony will announce the title of the games by the end of this year most likely at a Sony PlayStation Experience.

Place of Launch

As sources confirmed, Sony has decided to launch the games first in Japan than in other Asian countries and subsequently launching in other countries after that which has also proved to be a successful strategy for Pokémon Go.

Methodology

It will launch the games through its newly opened subsidiary, ForwardWorks based in Tokyo, Japan. Sony had formed this subsidiary solely for gaming purposes. However, it did not solidify as a feasible project. It will serve as a distributor of games to mobiles for Sony. According to Sony, ForwardWorks "will leverage the intellectual property of the numerous PlayStation dedicated software titles." and "will aim to deliver users with an opportunity to casually enjoy full-fledged game titles in the new field of the smart device market."

Strategy

Sony plans to launch mobile games that are closely associated with their popular game consoles. The company intends on taking it to the level of Pokémon Go.

However, it will be hard to compete with the standard set by Niantic with Pokémon Go. It is undoubtedly the ''biggest mobile game in the US history''

Sony will also be reviving some of its old game titles. Few sources claim that we can also expect to see 'Syphon Filter,' 'The Late Guardian' and other such dormant titles.

However, because the initial release is planned in the Asian countries, we can expect titles like 'Tenchu' series that appeal to the market of these countries.

What can the consumer expect?

Sony plans to capture its customer base with its gaming console titles. The company feels that the consumer will appreciate them as customers attract more to familiar brand names.

The major leaders in the mobile games industry are changing established trends. One can expect a shift in the AAA game development. Sony is all set to match with its competitors after lagging in the mobile industry.

Only the PlayStation had a remarkable reception. Sony though is unlikely to match with the upcoming launch of the Nintendo's Super Mario run on mobiles coming later this year, but it is still going to be an anticipated launch.
