How Games Like 'Super Mario Odyssey' Can Lower Depression Symptoms

Mental processes involve cognition -- like perception, memory, and decision-making -- and affect -- or emotional experiences. In depression, affective symptoms like persistent sadness are often apparent, but cognitive symptoms, such as negative thoughts and impaired decision-making, can also persist.

In a study, researchers explored the effects of video game intervention, particularly "Super Mario Odyssey," on depression symptoms, motivation and cognitive functions. The study aimed to understand whether playing this game could alleviate symptoms of major depressive disorder or MDD and improve visuospatial memory.

The researchers compared the impact of the gameplay, a cognitive training program called "CogPack," and standard MDD treatments on 46 individuals with depression. The goal was to assess depression symptoms, motivation and visuospatial memory functions.

Results favored the video game group, showing a substantial decrease in depressive symptoms and higher motivation. However, while the "CogPack" group exhibited improved visuospatial memory, the video game group's memory enhancements were less consistent. Standard treatments did not positively affect memory.

The findings suggest video game interventions could complement depression treatments. Still, limitations such as the study's small size and lack of blinding raise questions about result biases and generalizability.

Video games and mental health

Video games have multilevel influences on mental health. They offer cognitive stimulation, social connections and relaxation, positively impacting mental well-being. Engaging in gameplay creates a sense of accomplishment, potentially alleviating stress and anxiety. Some games explicitly target mental wellness, aiding in mindfulness and stress reduction.

However, excessive gaming can also disrupt sleep patterns and social interactions, posing risks to mental health. Therefore, optimal use, understanding personal thresholds, and selecting games purposefully are pivotal for harnessing gaming's therapeutic potential.
