Is Self-Care Overrated?

By Dynne C. | Update Date: Nov 11, 2023 05:29 AM EST

Over the years, social media has changed how people communicate and interact with information openly. It has been increasingly successful in allowing anyone to reach a worldwide audience and opening the minds of people to mental health, which has previously been recognized as a sensitive topic. People can now openly discuss it and are more open to self-care.

Self-care is the act of focusing on oneself and doing things that can improve both physical and mental well-being. It helps manage stress and increase energy levels. Some ways to do it include exercising, eating healthy, and focusing on positivity, among others.

What's Wrong With 'Self-Care'?

Although it sounds great, some believe that self-care is overrated and misunderstood by a lot. Being flooded on social media with posts about getting fit, eating a balanced diet, or journaling can get overwhelming for some.

That is because some do it for the hype, making others feel that it is necessary to overspend on some things that are supposed to help with self-care but then do the opposite.

Others get distracted by focusing on what they can do that influencers are also doing, making it unsustainable. While there is nothing wrong with self-care, taking its trivial concept away makes for a better approach to helping people thrive instead of simply following trends.

The Final Verdict

Practicing self-care is a personal decision that should be based solely on a person's needs and wants. While trends are there for a reason, it is important to assess the necessity of following them.

Self-care only becomes overrated when it is done only to follow current trends, but it is no doubt a necessary habit that we should all practice. After all, we can only do what we love most when we learn to take care of ourselves.
