LASIK is a state-of-the-art surgical procedure usually performed on an outpatient basis. It is typically used to treat refractive vision errors, such as myopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism.

Healing times are also quite quick, with most patients able to fully return to their normal routine within a few weeks. The procedure is also safe and painless. Numbing drops are used so that the patient does not feel anything during the procedure.

The patient may be given a mild sedative to take before the procedure if they feel anxious or nervous about the operation. The entire process usually takes less than half an hour to complete.

Here, we focus on what you need to do to maintain healthy eyes after vision correction surgery to return to an ideal quality of life sooner rather than later.

What is Post-Lasik Care?

LASIK involves using a top-of-the-line laser to make a tiny flap in the outermost corneal layer of the eye. The small flap allows the surgeon to access the tissue found underneath so that they can use a second laser to ablate the tissue.

The surgeon will alter the shape of your cornea very carefully and precisely to fix the refractive error that is causing your vision disorder and impairment. The flap that is made will usually reseal within a few days. LASIK does not involve the use of stitches.

Post-Lasik care refers to the care required after you have undergone LASIK. You will need to follow up with your surgeon after the surgery. They will provide you with a recovery plan that you should follow to avoid complications and accelerate the healing process.

Most patients feel normal after about a week has passed. You can boost your recovery by reducing stress and avoiding strenuous work or activities. You should take a few days off from work to recover.

Try to schedule the surgery on a Friday or during a long weekend. If you have some vacation time that you have accumulated, you can use a few days to recover comfortably. You will also be asked to return to the clinic or hospital 1 to 2 days after the procedure.

Your doctor will examine your eyes to ensure that they heal as intended. You may also need to return a few more times to ensure that your vision is optimal and that the operation was completely successful.

To prevent infection or the flap from opening up, you will need to wear a mask or patch. Doing so will prevent an accident while you rest and prevent you from rubbing your eyes.

Your eyes will also need to be kept moist while you heal. Dry eyes can be prevented by administering eye drops as prescribed by your doctor. Some discomfort is expected for a day or two after the procedure.

Your surgeon may prescribe a mild painkiller that you can take as needed while you recover, albeit most patients do not require the use of painkillers. It is important to realize that every patient is different.

Your LASIK procedure will be custom-tailored to your unique vision problem. Your recovery plan will also be developed according to your health and other needs. LASIK procedures are safe, effective, and affordable and can be used to treat a myriad of vision impediments.

How Do You Keep Your Eyes Healthy after LASIK?

Do not wear makeup, and wear your sunglasses as you recover. Avoid hot tubs or swimming pools, and prevent anything from getting into your eyes until you fully heal. Avoid any intensive activities, such as sports and vigorous exercise as well.

Use eye drops to prevent your eyes from becoming dry. Avoid activities that may cause eye strain, such as video games, TV, and reading. Do not rub or touch your eyes either.

What You Can Eat and What to Avoid After Eye Surgery

Avoid junk food and processed food products high in sodium and sugar.  Excess sugar increases blood sugar levels to the point where your vision will be impacted.

Fatty meats also increase the risk of macular degeneration, so they should be avoided. Fried foods are also high in free radicals that will damage the cells in your eyes.

Try and eat a balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables. Keep your eyes hydrated by drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water per day. Omega and lutein-rich foods, such as fish, eggs, and tomatoes, should be consumed.

Ways to Boost Recovery After LASIK

Protect your eyes from dryness, heat, dust, and excess moisture. Keep the area clean, get plenty of rest, and do not rub your eyes.

Avoid stress, drink copious amounts of water, use your eye drops as prescribed, and follow up frequently with your surgeon. Eat a nutritious and balanced diet, stop smoking, and eliminate other bad habits.
