While the UK had a decrease in cosmetic surgical procedures, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) had released on Wednesday the top cosmetic surgery in the United States. They have revealed that lip reduction procedures have increased dramatically last year. There were 3,547 lip reduction surgeries, representing a 283 percent increase from 2015.

Debra Johnson, plastic surgeon and president of ASPS said the procedure has been popular among Hispanic and African American women. The procedure can be carried out for less than $1,000.

There is no objective definition for normal lip size, but some people who have overly endowed lips get lip reduction for it to look a little bit like the normal range. Dr. Germaine Awad professor of educational psychology at the University of Technology wrote about how female African American college students define beauty.

Awad said one possible reason for lip reduction is the notion of striving toward a white European beauty ideal, which she said is also ironic. There are also a lot of other women who are increasing the size of their lips. There were 28,430 lip augmentation procedures last year based on ASPS numbers.

Another popular cosmetic procedure was labiaplasty, which reduces the inner lips of the vulva. A total of 12,666 labiaplasty procedures were carried out in 2016 which shows a 39% increase from 2015.

According to The Guardian, the top 10 cosmetic surgical procedures for 2016 were breast augmentaion (290,467), liposuction (235,237), nose reshaping (223,018), eyelid surgery (209,020), facelift (131,106), tummy tuck (127,633), breast lift (101,264), dermabrasion (88,182), neck lift (55,227) and forehead lift (43,038).

There were also 82 breast augmentation surgeries, 235,237 liposuction procedures and 223,018 nose reshaping surgeries in 2016. There were also non-surgical procedures which have increased, such as over 7 million Botulinum Toxin procedures or Botox, an increase from 786,911 in 2000.

Nigeria Today reported the top five non-surgical cosmetic procedures were Botox (7 million procedures), soft-tissue fillers (2.6 million), chemical peels (1.36 million), laser hair removal (1.1 million) and microdermabrasions (775,000).
