Australian Open 2017: Rest Key To Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s Dominance

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are considered by many as two of the best players in tennis history. However, their on-court dominance was hampered by a lot of injuries last season.

Federer sustained a knee injury for most of last year. Nadal, on the other hand, suffered a wrist injury that prevented him to miss a lot of tournaments. But the two legends bounced back very well from their temporary setback as the two squared-off in the Australian Open Finals.

According to Bleacher Report, rest is the key for Federer and Nadal's dominance in the Grand Slams. Because of injuries, both players played fewer tournaments than they usually did in their career. And being well rested both mind and body is the big factor why Federer and Nadal dominated the Australian Open.

With their aging bodies, they are more prone to a lot of injuries. For them to stay at the top of their game this season, they need enough rest and just play in the important tournaments of the ATP Tour. If Federer and Nadal will have enough rest and just play in the important tournaments, they could control the Men's Tennis this year just like they did in the 2000s.

Over the past few seasons, both Federer and Nadal slipped into the ATP Men's standings because of various injuries that are caused by too much fatigue from playing a lot of tournaments all year. Federer missed a lot of tournaments in 2013 due to back problems and he also dealt with knee injuries last year. Nadal, on the other hand, suffered back injuries in 2014 and wrist problems last season.

Now that the bodies of these two tennis masters are starting to weaken because of the restless pursuit of victories in tennis throughout their careers, they could still be at the top of Men's tennis if they play just the important tournaments. Just like Serena Williams is doing in the Women's tennis. Williams played fewer tournaments than most of the top women players but she is still the World No. 1.

Both Federer and Nadal admitted that they could still play at a very high level if they stay healthy and fit, as per ABC News. If both players became wise and put an emphasis on rest, they could dominate the tennis world once again. Fans will be very happy to see the Federer-Nadal rivalry being rejuvenated this year.
