There were no new Doctor Who episodes released in 2016. Thankfully, the annual Dr. Who Christmas Day special is a holiday tradition that geeks from all around the world can rejoice about.

Doctor Who Christmas Special - 'The Return of Dr. Mysterio'. Written by showrunner Steven Moffat, the Doctor Who Christmas special is set in New York City. It continues right after the last Christmas Special, "The Husbands of River Song."

Peter Capaldi returns for his final season, season 10, as the Twelfth Doctor of the series. The new companion Bill (played by Pearl Mackie) will not appear until the full season 10.

In "The Return of Dr. Mysterio," the doctor teams up with a Clark Kent type superhero named Grant (Justin Chatwin). He has an unspoken love interest named Lucy (Charity Wakefield).

Moffat devotes a considerable amount of time to the budding romance between Grant and Lucy. But he also focuses on both the comedy and the typical end-of-the-world elements of every Doctor Who plot.

The episode plays very well to Moffat's strengths. It is a whirlwind farce where characters are operating around a situation-comedy environment. The overall mood was light and fun, but with a touch of emotion and nostalgia.

Season 10 and 11 News. Season 10 will be Capaldi's third series as the doctor, but might also be his last. "This could be my final year - it's terrifying," he said sometime in late 2015. "I love Doctor Who, but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things."

The doctor's previous companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) will no longer be returning to season 10. There will be a new companion for season 10 named Bill (Pearl Mackie).

Capaldi has been asked to stay on until series 11 but he hasn't made up his mind yet if he wants to come back. Moffat will finally leave the show after seven years and will be replaced by Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall in 2018.

Moffat also insists that he will not be "writing out a Doctor" when he bids farewell to the series. But with Steven Moffat, you never really know what's to be expected.
