Fake "Super Mario Run" games have made their way to Google's official app store, Google Play, after the original version was launched exclusively for Apple devices. The game is currently free to try, but a payment of $9.99 is needed to unlock the higher levels.

When "Super Mario Run" reached the top spot in Apple's App Store within hours of release, some game developers have begun replicating the game and uploading their copies for Android users to download. These fake variants are causing alarm not just to Nintendo developers, but to gamers and fans alike.

"Mario Run Jumper" is one of those fake Super Mario Run games, which features the lead character sporting a lonely face. The gameplay and graphics are unimpressive and was even touted as comparable to the Flappy Bird clone, according to CNET

Experts have warned fans that downloading the APK outside of the Apple Store is dangerous as they could be installing malware or viruses on their mobile devices. Malicious programs could damage phones or tablets, or steal sensitive information without the owner's consent.

Additionally, Android users should not fall for scammers who ask for payments in exchange for clickbait links that supposedly download the original Super Mario Run game outside of the official app stores.

In an interview posted on Mashable, Super Mario Bros. maker Shigeru Miyamoto said that the exclusive iOS launch strategy and the "Always On" internet requirement of the installment was done for security purposes. Rumors as to why the game is not on Google Play point to concerns regarding Android's APK leaks.

Android users must take extra precaution and just wait for the game to be available for Android. There are no details yet as to when "Super Mario Run" can be played on Android devices
