Wearables are slowly creeping in and when that comes to mind, the immediate thing that pops up are the smartwatches now out in the open. Most tech companies have one such as Apple, Samsung and Motorola among others, each carrying their own set of features and design. The choice of wearable largely depends on how fashionable and reliable they could be aside from rendering the time and aiding in making or receiving calls.

Of the mix, Samsung has been around with smart wearable market for some time now though it has conspicuously not gained much ground. Nevertheless, the Korean company continues to find ways to make them tempting to get and this latest rumor should be pretty interesting.

Samsung has reportedly patented a curious new feature which should address concerns on how smartwatches are able to project the displays in the tiny screens. The ones who have to deal with some visual handicap find it hard to read messages but the said patent could be a big sigh of relief.

The filed patent will likely come in the next batch of Samsung wearables and offer them better user interface (UI). According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the said feature will be capable of identifying the shape of a user’s hand and then render a beam via tiny projector that will result in easier interface and larger controls. Aiding it is a built-in camera which will detect how the other hand interacts.

A diagram that came along with the filed patent shows that the interface in use will provide a better zoomed view of a map displayed on the watch as well as a larger dial pad. If true, this hints at parts of the UI possibly being projected onto the back of fingers and giving owners another kind of cheeky feature.

By using the hand as a secondary display, users can easily reply to text messages and emails, play games, and even watch videos that broadens the capability of wearables to date due to their size.

The patent will be a welcome improvement especially when it comes to user interface though Samsung may have to do a lot of work to apply it. One notable issue could be its effect on the battery life of the smartwatch since projecting such could hinder its use.

Perhaps in time it will come in handy but it remains that this is a curious and impressive feature that techies will truly look forward to.
