NYE Fireworks Fizzle Out to the Spectacular Show of Natural Phenomena, Northern Lights

By Kanika Gupta | Update Date: Jan 05, 2016 09:56 AM EST

This new year eve brought a special treat for all the stargazers. The Northern Lights dotted the sky in many locations across the world, making the fireworks display an unnecessary event. In one of its rare appearances, Aurora Borealis splashed across the Saltburn skies and left many night gazers in an awe. This natural phenomenon is visible occasionally across the UK sky. However, the forecasters had already prepared the world with its predictions of being sighted in the North East, meaning, it was most likely to be seen. As 2015 was coming to an end, the people could see the impact of speedy particles receding from the sun causing a geomagnetic storm that we call the Northern Lights, reports Gazette Live. Even though it may not be seen clearly with a naked eye, a camera can clearly capture the light phenomenon. "It was truly breathtaking to see," said local history enthusiast Sue, who captured the images just before midnight. "I had been keeping an eye on the Aurora Watch website when they put out an amber alert of a possible sighting, so we thought we would have a run out. I'm just so glad we took the chance."

The Aurora Borealis is formed as the electrically charged particles collide with the particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. These lights are best visible in the regions that are closest to the North Pole. This year, the stargazers were pleasantly greeted by the spectacular display of Northern Lights over North Wales and several other parts of UK on NYE. Already anticipating the splash in the sky, people were already armed with their cameras to capture this magical night, as reported by Daily Post
