According to the latest study, installing mirror in the dining room can help you eat less. When the diners look at their reflection, they watch what they eat. This simple yet effective behavioral technique can prevent overeating, says the food psychologists at the University of Central Florida. They also suggest that you can switch your fancy china and use paper plates instead, use fork to eat and consider skipping dinner if you are not hungry. "A glance in the mirror tells people more than just about their physical appearance," said lead researcher Dr. Ata Jami of the University of Central Florida. "It enables them to view themselves objectively and helps them to judge themselves and their behaviors in a same way that they judge others," according to the Telegraph.

Most people eat unhealthy food because it is perceived as tastier. However, the presence of mirror in the dining room or kitchen can alter the perception of unhealthy food which subsequently reduces its consumption too. Dr. Jami says that the mirrors can force people to compare and tie their behavior to the acceptable social standards. This is why when you eat in the presence of a mirror, it increases your discomfort and makes you eat less of the unhealthy food, according to Iran Daily

For the purpose of the study, the researchers asked 185 undergraduate students to pick between a fruit salad and a chocolate cake. They then evaluated its taste presence in a room with mirrors and the ones with no mirror at all. Those who chose chocolate cake perceived it as less tasty in a mirrored room. However, the taste of salad remains unaffected in a room with mirror. This test only holds true when the food is selected by the person because they they hold themselves responsible for their food choices, reported NDTV
