Woman's Glitter Hair Tie Leads To Emergency Surgery

In a new fad, Audrey Kopp from Kentucky had a hair tie on her wrist during her daily routine. She thought that she would be able to tie up her hair whenever she wanted.

However, it proved to be a tie of another kind---a serious infection on her wrist that required an operation.

The infection had been noticed as a lump on her wrist, even as she had been shifting houses. When she saw the infection, she visited doctors and took some antibiotics for it after asking a doctor. But that did not work out, as the lump only grew bigger, and she took more antibiotics.

As the lump could not get cured, she took more antibiotics. Doctors explained that she had to take up emergency surgery.

"She had a large abscess on the back of her wrist, so I basically made an incision and drained the puss all the way down," said Norton Healthcare's Dr. Amit Gupta.

Turning down the suggestion that the lump was due to insect bites, Kopp confirmed that it might be due to the glitter hair tie that she wore on her wrist

Filled with glitter, the hair tie might have contracted bacteria leading to strep, staph or gram-negative infections. Hence, the bacteria got into her skin pores and hair follicles, according to Metro.

"Be careful, you can't put all these hair ties around the wrist because it can cause problems with the skin," Gupta said.

Kopp is unbelieving about the incredible incident, yet thankful that it's all over. She is grateful to the doctor. "It could have been a whole different ballgame," said Kopp. "Once it gets into your bloodstream people are known to go into a coma, your body shuts down. It could have been way worse."

"I want to inform everyone to make sure no one else has to go thru this," Kopp said in one private Facebook post, reports People. "The GLITTER tie is the one that caused the issue."

The hair tie on the wrist has to be bid adieu. "I'm pretty sure about 90% of us females don't think twice about keeping hair-ties on our wrists. (Obviously I won't be doing it anymore.)"
