Scientists in Japan May Have Developed a New Type of Ultra-hard Glass that could Revolutionize Smartphone Displays

Smartphones would perhaps receive a robust makeover in the near future. A new type of ultra-hard glass has been created by few scientists in Japan that could be used for smartphone displays. The ultra-hard glass is made of a strange build, in the sense that while it is thin, it is also incredibly hard, reports BBC News. This solid material has apparently been made from alumina, an oxide of aluminium. This newly conceived material has been classified under oxide glasses, and mainly consists of silicon dioxide that is boosted with the strength of alumina, says The Financial Express.

According to The Financial Express, if all goes well and it is successfully commercialized, this tough glass could easily increase the durability nature of present day glass that is used across a wide variety of everyday living such as windows, vehicles, buildings, smartphone displays etc.

The team of researchers who discovered this new kind of glass are from the University of Tokyo and Japan's Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute. Their findings have been published in the Scientific Reports journal. According to the published report, it was quoted that: "Glasses with high elastic moduli have been in demand for many years because the thickness of such glasses can be reduced while maintaining its strength."

According to Dr Atsunobu Masuno, one of the researchers, was quoted as saying that "We will establish a way to mass-produce the new material shortly. We are looking to commercialize the technique within five years.", reports BBC News.
