NFL Trade 2017 Latest News & Update: Tony Romo Moving To Broncos Only Thru Free Agency

By Vaughn Dweebs | Update Date: Jan 30, 2017 08:50 AM EST

The future of Tony Romo remains unclear though all of that could take shape after Super Bowl LI next week. Any moves involving the 36-year-old quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys will be done in the offseason, assuming team owner Jerry Jones has one. The Denver Broncos have been frequently mentioned as a possible stop though John Elway does not plan to that via NFL trade.

The clear issue here is the financial aspect involving Tony Romo. With three more years remaining on his deal with the Broncos, it seems only plausible that Elway and company have opted to wait-and-see. Rather than a straight-up NFL trade, the Broncos may renew interest only if they can get Romo via free agency. Pro Football Talk reported. This would do away with the high salary of the injury-prone quarterback and give them more financial flexibility.

That said, all eyes are on Jones and the Cowboys. With Dak Prescott proving to be the quarterback of the future, Romo has been relegated as a backup and an expensive one at that. As mentioned in a previous post, Tony Romo is due to a hefty three-year salary broken down as follows: $24.7 million, $25.2 million and $23.7 million according to ESPN.

With those numbers, the Broncos have understandably been turned off. Hence, the next move may not only be up to the Cowboys but Tony Romo as well. The Broncos could cut him or re-negotiate his contract to come up with a win-win situation. Denver is likely to find some means to rid themselves of the dead salary Romo carries, more so for a backup quarterback.

Things are a bit complicated for Tony Romo right now and have fate depends on whether he would agree to sacrifice part of his deal. In the end, it may all boil down to a choice between playing on or sitting pretty as he gets paid the amount which he initially signed for with Dallas.
