Even though chocolate can be delicious on its own, food and snack companies have used this decadent treat to coat certain snacks from pretzels to fresh fruit. Now, Lay's, the largest salty snack maker in the United States, has announced that it will be rolling out its chocolate-covered potato chip. The latest salty and sweet combination will be going mainstream next week.

The company's latest creation is the Lay's Wavy Potato Chips Dipped in Milk Chocolate. The product will be sold in a five-ounce bag for $3.49. Not only will this new creation be the only one on the market so far, it will also be limited. The chocolate-covered potato chip will be a seasonal item and will only be available from Halloween through to New Year's. Furthermore, this product will only be sold at Target stores. However, the vice president of marketing at Frito-Lay, Ram Krishnan, has stated that if the product is a success, people can expect it to be available in other stores. It could also become a permanent product.

"When you try something drastically different, you have to walk before you can run," Krishnan explained. "We wanted to test our way through this before we go big."

"Flavors are getting more sophisticated and complex," Tom Vierhile, the innovation insights director at DataMonitor, said according to the Detroit Free Press. DataMonitor is a consumer products research firm. "We are seeing more products that may pair traditional flavor opposites."

Snacking in the US has been steadily increasing. In 2009, 24 percent of people stated that they snack three to four times a day. Now, that percentage has jumped to 43 percent according to Symphony IRI. Over the past years, several products have mixed sweet with salty. Some of these products include the Kettle Maple Bacon Potato chips, Planter's Sweet & Salty Snack Mix and Sweet 'n Salty Bugles.
