Women Really Do Divide the Number of Lovers They've Had, Survey Reveals

By Christine Hsu | Update Date: May 10, 2013 03:31 PM EDT

"When a girl tells you how many guys she's slept with, multiply it by three and that's the real number," Stifler tells his buddies in the movie "American Pie 2".

People have long suspected that women will often want to keep their 'good girl' image and divide the actual number of their former flames by three and men will do the opposite and multiply their partner tally when 'revealing' their secrets to a new lover.

Now a new survey has revealed that there really is some truth to the 2001 teen movie.

According to a poll conducted by MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, more than half of the women surveyed admitted to lying about the number of their former lovers.

The next most common lie women tell is the reason behind a breakup with a former lover.

The survey, which included 1,362 women aged 18 to 30, asked respondents to reveal the kinds of lies they are most prone to tell in a relationship.  Most women said that the lies they told were meant to protect the new partner's ego or feeling, according to the Daily Mail.

However, women are not entirely selfless when it comes to being dishonest. The survey revealed that many of the top ten lies women told were meant to protect themselves or to paint themselves in a better light.

The poll revealed that 5 percent of women confessed that they lie to their partners to appear more likeable.  The lies include the amount of money they spend on clothes, their job, financial situation, breast size and weight.

However, 63 percent of women surveyed agreed that lies led to arguments and disagreements in relationships, and 55 percent of women said they would be upset and 21 percent said they would be angry if their partners lied to them.

According to the survey 13 percent said that discovering their partner had lied to them would cause them to 'stop trusting' their lover.

"I am so surprised that the most common thing women lie about is the number of previous partners they've had," said Bobbie Malpass, editor of MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, according to the Daily Mail.

"You hear all the time that the key to a healthy relationship is honesty and trust, but clearly people aren't abiding by that," he said. "If you don't want to open up about that sort of thing, just don't mention it at all!"
