A Malaysian man severed his father's genitals as well as his own early Sunday morning in a bid to save his family from doomsday.

According to Star Online, authorities believe that the 40-year-old man was "influenced by a false religious belief he picked up from the Internet".

Police said the attack happened about 1:30 a.m. The two men had been rushed to a local hospital.  Doctors at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu successfully reattached both penises.  While the son is in stable condition, his 67-year-old father remains in intensive care, according to the Huffington Post.

According to the New Straits Times, K. Manoharan, the chief assistant commissioner of the Malaysian state's Criminal Investigation Department told reporters that the middle-aged man who works as a mechanic in Balakong returned home to tell his parents about a doomsday theory.

"He sent text messages to his three siblings asking them to come home and congregate on this pressing matter," Manoharan told the New Straits Times.

The mechanic told his relatives that he was certain that Armageddon would be on the following Friday.

The man had told his relatives that in order to save them he needed to channel the spirit of Imam Nawawi into the body of his 67-year-old father.  However, the spirit can only successfully enter his father's body if the father cried.

"After his father was not able to cry voluntarily, he hit him with his hands and with a rattan stick. This went on until 1.30am."

Later the man took a kitchen knife into a room where his father was resting and proceeded to cut off his father's penis in an attempt to make him cry, Manoharan said.  Two minutes later, the man then cut off his own penis and asked his brother-in-law to do the same. However, the brother-in-law managed to escape unharmed.

Authorities say the man is now being investigated for causing grievous injury and attempted suicide.
