Huntsman Cancer Institute CEO Mary Beckerle Gets Position Back; Here's What We Know So Far

Huntsman Cancer Institute CEO and director, Dr. Mary Beckerle is back in the organization a week after she was ousted because of controversy. Get to know more details, here.

This cancer research center is located in South Lake Utah and was founded by a philanthropist, Jon Hunstman Sr. Dr. Mary Beckerle has been the CEO and director of the research center since 2009 but was fired last Apr.17.

Controversy Involving Beckerle

The Salt Lake Tribune reported that State administrators are expected to investigate the procedures within the University of Utah in the consequence of the ousting and reinstatement of Mary Beckerle, as CEO at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes said in a statement late Tuesday (Apr. 25) that legislators then had grounds to investigate the university.

This was after allegations that funds donated by medical expert, Patrick Soon-Shiong to the Huntsman Cancer Institute were used to pay one of the establishments owned by the billionaire physician. Although, Beckerle was fired with no stated reason. There are reports that the alleged misuse of funds can be one of the reasons why she was ousted as CEO.

Changes After Mary Beckerle Reinstatement

The CEO of the Huntsman Cancer Institute will now communicate directly with David Pershing, the University of Utah president - in an arrangement that limits her off from Vivian Lee, senior vice president for health sciences and CEO of university health care department, per Inside Higher Ed.

The publication also added that as per a statement from Kathy Willets, the spokesperson of the university, the only change in the cancer institute now that Beckerle is back in the reporting structure. The institute will still continue to provide excellent studies and research on cancer.
