Rafael Nadal cuts his disappointing season early because of wrist injury

Ace tennis player Rafael Nadal has decided to cut this season short so that his wrist injury gets enough to time to heal.

The Spaniard, who turned 30 this June, was sidelined for over two months this summer and wasn't in the best of his health at the Rio Olympics held in August, something which he himself conceded.

However, Nadal's performance at the Olympics spoke little about it as he lost the bronze to Japan's Kei Nishikori but more than made up for by winning the gold in the doubles by pairing with compatriot Marc Lopez.

But he hasn't been able to impress ever since. He was beaten by a much low-ranked Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals of the China Open in early October and then lost to Serbian Viktor Troicki to crash out of the Shanghai Masters last week. Nadal was visibly distressed after the show and said he could not say what he would do in the next month.

"Sometimes to keep competing is not the solution. Sometimes the solution is practice and stop and have a process of training. Maybe that's an opportunity to do it. I'm not sure about that," Nadal said.

The effort to accelerate his return by playing the Olympics was undoubtedly a great show as a patriot, but did it aggravate his injury?

Nadal, who has 14 Grand Slams titles to his credit and is currently ranked sixth, said he had to ultimately take a step back so that he can start preparing for next year.

""This forced recovery has caused me pain since then and now I am forced to stop and start preparing the 2017 season," he said, said this report.

The current year has been a disaster for the man as he could win just two titles and they had come long back in April. He suffered his latest injury in May and even pulled out of the French Open, the tournament he loves to dominate (nine titles so far).

"I am very saddened for not being able to play next week in Basle since I have a great memory of the tournament and the final played against Roger Federer last year," a Daily Mail article said.

Nadal lost to rival Roger Federer 3-6, 7-5, 3-6 in the final of Swiss Indoors in Basel last year in a best-of-three final. Nadal's absence at Basel this year will also be a big loss for the tennis enthusiasts for his rivalry with Federer is something that contemporary tennis savours.

In fact, the absence of both these greats in the ATP World Tour Finals in London next year is indeed a big loss for the tennis lovers.
