A successful exploration initiated by the American Cancer Society has maintained positive consequences of standing for a short period of time. In collaboration with The Cooper Institute, the University of Texas, and the University of Georgia, the research has finally made its way into the Mayo clinic proceedings.

The study revolves around the concept of obesity and how it can be linked to standing for at least one quarter of the day. The man behind the research, Dr. Kerem Shuval, who is the Director of Physical Activity & Nutrition Research at the American Cancer Society continued the study and scanned the association between standing habits, metabolic risks and eventually obesity. The research incorporated 7,000 individuals or adult patients who repetitively visits the Cooper clinic for the period of 2010 to 2015. The connection between standing time and obesity was, therefore, scrutinized through three factors which consists of the body mass index, fat percentage of respective bodies and ultimately the waist circumference.

Another added element to the entire research was the participation of metabolic syndrome, which was used in order to evaluate the bond between metabolic risks and standing time.

The concluding remarks highlighted that standing for a quarter of time per day results in 32% less chances of obesity for men. Surprisingly, standing for almost half of the day is linked to 59% less chances of obesity. And lastly, standing for three quarters of the time did not emphasize any reduced possibility of obesity.

The results varied among women as standing for quarter, half and three quarters of the time resulted in 35%, 47%, 57% less chance of obesity.

The study was bound due to certain limitations and according to the researchers, new perspectives should be covered in order to make sure that standing has a positive health benefit or whether it's the other way round.

Despite above mentioned results, scientists have considered it imperative to further dig deeper into the research as standing for a prolonged period can have adverse effects as well. Varicose veins are one of the diseases, individuals can receive for standing throughout the day.
