Change Pillows Every Six Months, Sleep Experts

Keeping a pillow for more than six months can lead to embarrassing pimples and painful allergies, according to experts.

Experts explain that the dirt, oil and dead skin that accumulates in older pillows can cause acne and trigger allergies.

People who don't change their pillows are risking their facial appearance by pushing their faces against all sorts of nasty things like dead skin cells, bodily oils, dirt, and mites Dr. Robert Oexman, the director of the Sleep to Live Institute in Mebane, North Carolina, told The Huffington Post.

Oexman works with other scientists to engineer products that improve sleep quality.

Experts also note that pillows older than half a year can also trigger or worsen asthma and allergic reactions.

Dr. Mark Neustrom, an allergist & immunologist at Kansas City Allergy and Asthma Associates told reporters that two out of three people who suffer allergies might also be allergic to dust mites that burrow in carpets and bedding. Suffering stronger allergy reactions in the morning and at night could be a sign for allergy sufferers to invest in new pillows.

Oexman said there are other ways people can prevent acne, allergies or asthma attacks such as regularly washing their bed linens and tumbling their bedding and pillows in driers, according to the Daily Mail.
